That storm today did two things: it ate a chunk of my last email, and it reminded everyone that August in Columbus is a "have an indoor plan" kind of month.

So this one does both. First, the market update in case you missed it. Then - since we're all dodging the heat and the storms anyway - five genuinely great places to actually go in Columbus this month. I checked; they're all open and worth your time right now.

If you missed my breakdown, here's what the live MLS data actually says about Columbus right now:

We're rebalancing, not crashing. Active inventory is up 28% since winter - but homes are still selling fast and near full price (97%+ of original list). More choice for buyers, without the market falling. That's a soft landing, not a downturn.

We're still a seller's market - just a more reasonable one. About 2.6 months of supply, when balanced is 4 to 6. Sellers are still winning; buyers finally have a little room to breathe.

The standout number: Westerville. Homes there took an average of 52 days to sell back in January. Now? 16.6 days. That's 68% faster in six months - the sharpest speed-up of any suburb in the metro. If you're selling in Westerville, you're in the strongest position in the region.

And the cheaper homes appreciated the most. Hilliard's median jumped 28.6% since January; the affordable, strong-schools pockets are where demand runs deepest.

August heat plus surprise thunderstorms equals a good excuse to go somewhere air-conditioned and worth it. These are my picks, and a few have exhibits that are ending soon - so the timing matters.

Franklin Park Conservatory - the move this month, and it's stacked. Two things running right now: David Rogers' Big Bugs, giant handcrafted insect sculptures throughout the gardens (up through late September), and the butterfly exhibit, which closes around August 23 - so you've got roughly two weeks left on that one. Add the permanent Chihuly glass collection and it's the most beautiful indoor hour in the city. 1777 E. Broad St.

COSI - one of the best science centers in the country, and all ages genuinely mean it. There's a mythological-creatures exhibit running through the first week of September that's a great reason to go now. Hands-on, huge, and a perfect rainy-afternoon reset for families. Downtown on the riverfront.

Otherworld - a massive immersive, interactive art installation in the Discovery District. Part walk-through art, part playground for your imagination - you climb through it, touch everything, and get a little lost on purpose. Nothing else in Columbus feels like it, and it's fully indoor. Free parking on site.

North Market Downtown - the historic food hall, and the easiest universal win on this list. Dozens of local vendors under one roof: coffee, dumplings, ice cream, tacos, whatever you're in the mood for. Go hungry, wander, sample your way through. Casual, air-conditioned, and pure Columbus.

Columbus Museum of Art - the classic, and criminally easy to overlook. Rotating exhibits, a beautiful permanent collection, and one of the better date-afternoon or slow-Saturday options in the city. Downtown, with a flat $7 lot right there.

That's your August. Homes are moving, the heat is winning, and the city's got plenty to offer indoors while you plan your next move - literally or figuratively.
